{"id":183,"date":"2024-06-10T08:33:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T06:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/legaldesignandcodelab\/?page_id=183"},"modified":"2025-03-06T12:36:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T11:36:58","slug":"teaching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/legaldesignandcodelab\/teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Law and Computation (in English, at EPFL)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both law and computation have been permeating our private and professional lives: the law has done so for thousands of years already by determining the social and economic structures in which we interact, while in comparison, digitalization only much more recently has been transforming our societal fabric. Understanding how the law can enable or constrain innovation within the broad domain of computation or digitalization is central for developers and engineers to determine how to shape future, responsible computing as well as regulatory environments. Within this course, we will analyze the regulatory toolkit at the disposition of policymakers and map legislations that emerged in Switzerland, Europe, and selected jurisdictions across the globe. We will analyze how the field of digital law has shifted over the years, more recently with a focus on data-driven computing and machine learning, and aiming to achieve trustworthy AI. We will critically reflect on the shortcomings of current legislation and envisage new approaches to address new risks that an ever-artificially intelligent world entails. This opens up the discussion to newer approaches and domains of law, that are focused on how computation and design can improve legal processes and access to law and justice. These new approaches are situated within the field of regulatory innovation, legal design, and computational law and combine the expertise of computer scientists, human-computer interaction designers, and legal scholars and are often driven by the quest to leverage interdisciplinary know-how to create more accessible legal processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Governance (in English, at UNIL)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence has been a critical topic on policymakers&#8217; agenda: From the AI Act in the European Union to the Executive Order on AI in the US to the Bletchley Declaration on AI Safety worldwide, we are starting to determine how to approach the complex topic of AI. In Switzerland, there are also debates on how to regulate the risks of AI. We need to align our approach with European and global strategies to ensure AI development and deployment that benefits society in the long term. In this course, we look into AI governance by first understanding what AI technologies can do and the associated risks and second analyzing the regulatory landscape and legislation or international agreements that have emerged in recent years. We will look at concrete sectors and examples of how AI is being deployed and discuss how principles and guidelines can be applied within those sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Governance and Regulatory Frameworks (at UNIL\/EPFL)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the increasing adoption of AI technologies in organisational processes, a strong understanding of the risks and opportunities and the applicable regulations is needed more than ever. Regulations such as the EU AI Act oblige private and public providers and deployers of AI systems to ensure a sufficient level of AI knowledge and skills (so-called AI literacy) among their staff and third parties dealing with the operation and use of AI systems on their behalf. In this intensive course you will learn and discuss questions such as: what are the practical implications of the AI Act in Europe and in Switzerland? How can AI technologies be evaluated and managed in compliance with new regulations? La transformation num\u00e9rique qui nous entoure a fondamentalement modifi\u00e9 notre \u00e9conomie, nos interactions sociales, et les processus juridiques. Nous allons analyser les r\u00e9ponses r\u00e9gulatrices qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tablies (et qui \u00e9mergent) en Suisse, en Europe et dans certaines juridictions \u00e0 travers le monde. En comprenant quelle est la palette d&#8217;outils de r\u00e9gulation \u00e0 la disposition des d\u00e9cideurs politiques, nous pouvons r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir de mani\u00e8re critique \u00e0 leurs lacunes et envisager de nouvelles approches pour faire face aux nouveaux risques qui se posent dans un monde de plus en plus artificiellement intelligent. Cela ouvre la voie \u00e0 de nouvelles approches et \u00e0 de nouveaux domaines du droit, qui se concentrent sur la fa\u00e7on dont la computation et la conception peuvent am\u00e9liorer les processus juridiques et l&#8217;acc\u00e8s au droit. Dans le cadre de ce cours tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9, vous apprendrez \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir de mani\u00e8re critique aux questions juridiques actuelles et futures et \u00e0 envisager des moyens de concevoir les futures approches r\u00e9gulatrices de l&#8217;\u00e8re num\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transformation num\u00e9rique du droit (in French, at UNIL)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 l&#8217;\u00e8re num\u00e9rique, la plupart des professions et des domaines ont chang\u00e9. En droit, la technologie a transform\u00e9 la mani\u00e8re dont nous acc\u00e9dons \u00e0 l&#8217;information, analysons et cr\u00e9ons des documents juridiques, automatisons le respect des r\u00e8gles juridiques et r\u00e9digeons des d\u00e9cisions. Ces d\u00e9veloppements s&#8217;appuient sur une longue ligne de recherche sur la fa\u00e7on d&#8217;exploiter les technologies num\u00e9riques dans le domaine juridique pour rendre le droit plus efficace et accessible. Dans ce cours, nous examinerons les diff\u00e9rentes fa\u00e7ons dont la transformation num\u00e9rique a chang\u00e9 le travail des professionnels du droit dans le domaine priv\u00e9 et public. En analysant les startups LegalTech existantes en Suisse et a l\u2019\u00e9tranger, nous obtiendrons une compr\u00e9hension concr\u00e8te de ce qui peut \u00eatre r\u00e9alis\u00e9 dans \u201cle monde du droit\u201d.
