To preserve this energy homeostasis, the brain engages in continuous dialogue with peripheral tissues to regulate both the energy entering the organism (through food intake) and the energy leaving it (through expenditure). To fulfill this role, the brain senses metabolic signals\u2014including hormones and nutrients\u2014that convey information about nutritional status and body energy stores, and responds through efferent regulatory pathways\u2014mainly via the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems\u2014to restore energy balance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/langletlab\/files\/2022\/12\/balance.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/langletlab\/files\/2022\/12\/balance.jpg 735w, https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/langletlab\/files\/2022\/12\/balance-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/langletlab\/files\/2022\/12\/balance-540x401.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Mobile<\/em>, Alexander Calder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-primary-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:24px;font-style:normal;font-weight:200;letter-spacing:1px\">Over the past decade, it has become evident that tanycytes\u2014specialized hypothalamic glial cells lining the floor of the third ventricle\u2014are ideally positioned to detect fluctuations in nutrient and hormone levels and to relay this metabolic information to neurons.
