Selon son contemporain Paul West,\u00a0l’\u00e9crivain Walter Abish a remport\u00e9 plus de prix dans sa vie qu’il n’a \u00e9crit de livres.\u00a0N\u00e9 \u00e0 Vienne en 1931, \u00e9migr\u00e9 en Isra\u00ebl via Shangha\u00ef en 1940, et \u00e9tabli \u00e0 New York depuis 1957, celui-ci s’est en effet impos\u00e9 au cours des trente derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es comme une figure influente et charismatique de la litt\u00e9rature am\u00e9ricaine contemporaine.\u00a0Son travail, traduit dans plus de dix langues, a \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement bien re\u00e7u dans les pays germanophones, en raison non seulement de son roman Allemand, dites-vous ?\u00a0<\/i>(1980), mais aussi gr\u00e2ce aux multiples affinit\u00e9s de l’expuls\u00e9 autrichien avec la langue et la litt\u00e9rature allemandes.<\/p>\n

La pr\u00e9sente publication \u00e9dit\u00e9e par Robert Leucht (Section d\u2019allemand<\/a>) est le premier Materialienband<\/em> d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Walter Abish. Du roman Alphabetical Africa<\/em> (1974) \u00e0 l’autobiographie\u00a0Double Vision<\/em> (2004) en passant par l’anthologie 99, The New Meaning<\/em> (1990), il ambitionne de rendre justice \u00e0 la complexit\u00e9 de son \u0153uvre en faisant appel \u00e0 diverses voix et en adoptant diff\u00e9rentes perspectives compl\u00e9mentaires. En plus de critiques et d’analyses de titres individuels, il contient une pr\u00e9sentation biographique de la vie d’Abish ainsi qu’une bibliographie compl\u00e8te.<\/p>\n
