Cet ouvrage retrace les d\u00e9veloppements du cosmopolitisme classique dans la Grande-Bretagne du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle afin de montrer comment les actes d’inclusion issus d’une perspective cosmopolite ont cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 faire face \u00e0 l’imp\u00e9rialisme britannique, \u00e0 la guerre, \u00e0 l’injustice sociale, \u00e0 l’esclavage et aux technologies d’am\u00e9lioration personnelle et sociale, des pr\u00e9occupations qui perdurent encore aujourd’hui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’h\u00e9ritage classique mis en lumi\u00e8re ici par Enit Karafili Steiner (Section d’anglais<\/a> et Centre interdisciplinaire d’\u00e9tude des litt\u00e9ratures<\/a>) permet de mieux cerner le cosmopolitisme et les innovations du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle qui pr\u00e9figurent les d\u00e9bats post-coloniaux. Invitant les lecteurs \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier le cosmopolitisme comme une philosophie en d\u00e9veloppement plut\u00f4t que comme une philosophie statique et achev\u00e9e, cette \u00e9tude r\u00e9fute une objection qui circulait au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle et qui est toujours d’actualit\u00e9, \u00e0 savoir le m\u00e9pris du cosmopolitisme pour les valeurs locales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
