In the 18th century «luxury» was a keyword in republican theories of state and society which were discussed primarily in France and England but also in Switzerland. The opponents of luxury saw in the increasing consumption of goods a danger to the virtue of the citizen, while its supporters praised luxury as a motor for economic development and a sign of cultural progress. Although the controversy about luxury and its effects on the state waned towards the end of the 18th century, both social and state theories remained essential for understanding political and social developments in the 19th century. Notably in Switzerland after the foundation of the modern federal state in 1848, the relation between political virtue and economic progress has often been discussed. While research usually focuses the break between the 18th and 19th centuries, this workshop aims to identify aspects of continuity and to consider how elements of the 18th century discussion maintained their relevance in the 19th century.
