Many tools are emerging, offering a wide range of features, from <strong>automated article discovery<\/strong> to <strong>citation analysis<\/strong> and the <strong>visualization of scientific corpora<\/strong>. In this context of proliferating solutions, it is essential for researchers to understand the specificities, uses, and limitations of each tool in order to select those best suited to their methodological objectives and to ensure the <strong>rigor and quality<\/strong> of a scientific literature review.<\/p>\n\n<p>This article aims to briefly present a <strong>non-exhaustive list<\/strong> of these tools and to encourage you to explore them for yourself so that you can integrate them into your own working practices.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Precautions for use.<\/strong> AI-generated syntheses may contain <strong>hallucinations<\/strong>, meaning entirely fabricated references, non-existent citations, or erroneous interpretations of sources. The coverage of these tools is predominantly <strong>English-language<\/strong> and more oriented toward the <strong>exact and medical sciences<\/strong>. French-language publications and work in the humanities and social sciences are generally less well represented. It is therefore essential to <strong>systematically verify<\/strong> every reference and every claim by consulting the original sources. It makes <strong>three major contributions<\/strong> to research work: first, the <strong>discovery of an initial corpus<\/strong> from keywords and authors; second, the <strong>expansion of the corpus<\/strong> through the &#8220;Cited by&#8221; and &#8220;Related articles&#8221; features, which allow users to trace foundational works and identify more recent publications; and third, <strong>scientific monitoring<\/strong>, through the creation of automatic alerts on a query or an author.<\/p>\n\n<p>To use it effectively in a scientific review, it is recommended to adopt an <strong>iterative approach<\/strong>: start by combining keywords and synonyms, use quotation marks for exact phrases, refine by publication period, author, or journal using the advanced search, then systematically exploit <strong>citation chains<\/strong> to identify central contributions and recent debates. Google Scholar also facilitates the organization of work through saving references in a <strong>personal library<\/strong> and exporting citations to bibliographic management software, enabling a more efficient transition from documentary research to the structured writing of the literature review.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is also worth noting that Google now offers, through the &#8220;<strong>Labs<\/strong>&#8221; tab accessible in Scholar&#8217;s navigation bar, <strong>experimental generative AI features<\/strong>. These make it possible to obtain automated syntheses of search results, thus bringing Scholar closer to tools such as Consensus or Elicit. It retrieves the most relevant articles for a given topic, then groups these results into <strong>clusters<\/strong> (thematic groupings) represented as bubbles. Each cluster contains related publications and key concepts that help understand the structure of the field.<\/p>\n\n<p>This visualization helps to quickly identify the <strong>main themes<\/strong>, <strong>sub-topics<\/strong>, and <strong>conceptual links<\/strong> between works, providing a clear overview of a complex subject without registration or financial barriers. Open Knowledge Maps is designed on <strong>open science<\/strong> principles, is freely available, and allows users to navigate through clusters, click on articles, consult their metadata, and access open-access versions when available.<\/p>\n\n<p>In a research process, the user simply enters keywords, generates a knowledge map, and then explores the bubbles to identify influential articles and the conceptual relationships linking different sets of results. For a literature review, Connected Papers is valuable in the exploratory phase: it helps ensure that no important publications are overlooked, to identify the theoretical foundations of a domain, and to build a coherent bibliographic corpus. Results are presented as <strong>structured reports<\/strong> including a summary synthesis, comparative tables between studies, and suggestions for further research, all of which can be saved in a notebook or exported.<\/p>\n\n<p>Beyond documentary research, SciSpace offers complementary features such as <strong>assisted writing<\/strong> (AI Writer), paraphrasing, citation generation, or conversation with an imported PDF. These ancillary features are of variable maturity and do not replace rigorous writing work.<\/p>\n\n<p>For the literature review, the main value of SciSpace lies in its ability to <strong>automate the collection, synthesis, and structuring<\/strong> of information in a single workflow. The user formulates their question, and the tool takes care of locating relevant articles, extracting key data, and producing an actionable report. This approach saves time during the exploratory phase, while retaining the ability to verify each cited source.
