intelligence survey at UNIL: widespread use and clear expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> at the University of Lausanne carried out, from <strong>November 29 to December 13, 2024<\/strong>, a <strong>survey among the university community<\/strong> to better understand AI uses, perceptions, and expectations.<br \/>The <strong>results of this study<\/strong>, based on responses from <strong>1,827 members of UNIL<\/strong>, will help guide the future <strong>institutional strategy<\/strong> on artificial (PDF)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Widespread adoption of AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>88% of respondents<\/strong> reported having already used a generative AI tool.<br \/>Among them, <strong>53% use it very frequently<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The most common uses include <strong>translation<\/strong>, <strong>language editing<\/strong>, <strong>information retrieval<\/strong>, <strong>document summarization<\/strong>, and <strong>brainstorming<\/strong>.<br \/><strong>Conversational assistants<\/strong> (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) and <strong>translation tools<\/strong> (DeepL, Google Translate) largely dominate current practices.<\/p>\n\n<figure has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Differences and nuances across profiles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The survey highlights <strong>differences by gender and role<\/strong>.<br \/><strong>34% of men<\/strong> report intensive or daily use, compared to <strong>21% of women<\/strong>.<br \/><strong>Students<\/strong> mainly use AI for idea generation and information search.<br \/><strong>Teachers and researchers<\/strong> favor translation, language editing, and programming.<br \/><strong>Administrative and technical staff<\/strong> mainly use AI for drafting and reviewing administrative documents.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Positive perceptions with cautious awareness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>A large majority (<strong>87%<\/strong>) consider AI tools to be <strong>useful<\/strong> in academic and professional contexts.<br \/>However, this enthusiasm is tempered by several <strong>significant concerns<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI bias<\/strong>: 79% report being concerned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data privacy<\/strong>: 69%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ethical implications<\/strong>: 70%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental impact<\/strong>: 53%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>These results reflect a <strong>critical and thoughtful approach<\/strong> to AI and its implications.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expectations toward the institution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Respondents expressed a <strong>clear need for institutional support<\/strong> from UNIL:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>61%<\/strong> call for clear <strong>guidelines<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>52%<\/strong> request <strong>ethical and legal support<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>50%<\/strong> wish for <strong>broader access to AI tools<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>41%<\/strong> expect <strong>more training opportunities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Teachers and researchers<\/strong> emphasize the importance of clear frameworks and ethical\/legal guidance.<br \/><strong>Administrative and technical staff<\/strong> highlight the need for training and technical support.<br \/><strong>Students<\/strong> prioritize clear guidelines and tool access.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toward an institutional strategy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Based on these findings, the <strong>AI Expert Group<\/strong> recommends a strategy structured around <strong>six key areas<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Participatory and adaptive governance<\/strong> for AI use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clear regulatory framework<\/strong> for teaching, research, and assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Critical and ethical approach<\/strong> shared across the community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integration of environmental considerations<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secure institutional access<\/strong> to tools that respect data confidentiality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tailored training programs<\/strong> adapted to different profiles and levels of expertise<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
