Joël Wagner is Full Professor of Actuarial Science and Swiss Finance Institute Professor at HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne.

His research interests cover topics in risk management and insurance. Recent and ongoing work includes the analysis of current challenges in health, life and pension insurance (e.g., long-term care, modern life insurance products, old-age provisions), in insurance pricing (e.g., data analysis and rate-making techniques), in insurance management (e.g., distribution and claims management), and recent developments in regulatory and reporting frameworks.

Before joining HEC Lausanne, he was Assistant Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and Member of the Executive Board of the Institute of Insurance Economics. He holds a venia legendi in Business Administration with special emphasis on Risk Management from HSG. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics and his engineering degree in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 2006 and 2002 respectively. From 2006 to 2009 he was a consultant in the Financial Services and Insurance practice of The Boston Consulting Group.
