National Geographic: Explorers’ Grant

National Geographic funds “Bold, innovative, transformative work” for individuals working on projects in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that align with one or more of our focus areas:

  • Ocean: aims to explore, understand, and conserve marine and coastal systems. Across topics like oceanography, marine/coastal ecology, climate science, ocean exploration technology, community-based conservation, and related fields.
  • Land: aims to explore, understand, and conserve terrestrial and freshwater systems around the world. Across topics like terrestrial geosciences, terrestrial/freshwater ecology, climate science, conservation technology, community-based conservation, and related fields.
  • Wildlife: aims to discover, understand, and conserve individual species or genera of animals, plants, or other forms of life. Across topics like ethology, population biology, evolutionary biology, conservation technology, species conservation, and related fields
  • Human history and culture: aims to preserve cultural knowledge and better understand human history, culture, diversity, and evolution—past and present. Across topics like archaeology, cultural anthropology, paleoanthropology, human geography, human migration, and related fields
  • Human ingenuity: aims to develop creative, novel, or scalable solutions to global sustainability challenges and projects that highlight breakthrough solutions and innovations. Across topics like applied artificial intelligence and technology, innovations in climate adaptation, natural resources and systems sustainability, outer space, and related fields

Amount: $20’000 for one-year long projects
