ERC Starting Grants 2023

The 2023 ERC Starting Grants call (ERC-2023-StG) is now open. ERC Starting Grants are generally awarded for five years with funding of €1.5 million and should enable promising candidates (PhD obtained 2-7 years before 1.1.2023) to gain scientific independence and establish their own group and leadership.

The possibility of Swiss submissions being evaluated by the ERC is currently being examined. If this proves possible, successful submissions with Swiss host institutions will then be funded by the SERI

SERI recommends that researchers in Switzerland prepare their submission for the 2023 ERC Starting Grant.

In case a submission is still not possible by 25 October 2022, the Federal Council has already decided to offer funds for a corresponding transitional measure. According to a consultation conducted by SERI, the SNSF, swissuniversities and the ETH Board unanimously intend that the SNSF should open an integrative call for proposals in November 2022 in the form of the “Starting Grants SNSF 2023” (see the 2022 version of this call here). The SNSF call for proposals would be as close as possible to the ERC call for proposals, particularly with regard to the proposal to be submitted and the evaluation criteria. The SNSF will provide information on this call in due course.
