Scope of DSBU FAIR \/ ORD Services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The services provided by the DSBU cover the&nbsp;<strong>entire lifecycle of research data<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>documentation(README files) and structuring of data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>metadata <\/strong>management and <strong>standardization<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>preparation of datasets for FAIR sharing <\/strong>and <strong>Open Research Data<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support for sharing datasets in <strong>recognized FAIR data repositories<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use of the&nbsp;<strong>HORUS Dataset Catalog (CHUV)<\/strong>&nbsp;for sharing metadata associated with s<strong>ensitive clinical research datasets<\/strong> when the data themselves cannot be made directly accessible;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>long-term preservation<\/strong> and <strong>archiving<\/strong> of data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong>Details<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p>The DSBU provides scientific and technical support, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>targeted workshops for research groups;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>individualized follow-up tailored to researchers\u2019 needs (<a class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Integration and Optimization of DataSquid<sup>\u00a9DSBU <\/sup>for Data Sharing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Services include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>installation and configuration of&nbsp;<strong>DataSquid<sup>\u00a9DSBU <\/sup>(<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/dsbu\/tools_readme\/\">link<\/a>)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>optimization of the tool according to the types of data produced;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Progressive integration of metadata flows from FBM research platforms into external repositories aligned with FAIR principles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enriched and Standardized Metadata<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The DSBU ensures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>automated extraction of internal metadata from imaging data files<br>(.FCS, .DICOM, .LIF, .ND2, .CZI, .LSM, etc.) using our tool <strong>FAIR Bioimage Metadata Extractor<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup><\/strong> ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>harmonization and standardization of metadata according to current disciplinary standards and ontologies;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>semi-automated generation of&nbsp;<strong>FAIR-compliant README files<\/strong>&nbsp;for comprehensive dataset documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F<strong>AIR Compliance and Regulatory Alignment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The DSBU performs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>verification of dataset compliance with FAIR principles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>alignment with the requirements of the&nbsp;<strong>Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Horizon Europe<\/strong>, provides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>adjustment of datasets in response to reviewers\u2019 feedback;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drafting or validation of the&nbsp;<strong>Data Availability<\/strong>&nbsp;section;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>verification of the links between the scientific publication, DOI, and dataset;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recommendations aimed at maximizing data visibility and citation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ethical Compliance and Management of Sensitive Data<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the framework of FAIR sharing, the DSBU ensures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>indexing and dissemination&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong>of&nbsp;<strong>metadata&nbsp;for&nbsp;sensitive clinical research datasets&nbsp;<\/strong>linked to CHUV publications, while&nbsp;<strong>ensuring&nbsp;data security<\/strong>&nbsp;and regulatory compliance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>compliance with the ethical and regulatory requirements<\/strong> of the responsible bodies<br>(CER-VD, CHUV Legal Services, CHUV Sponsor Office, etc.);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>verification of the compliance of <strong>patient consent forms<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>risk assessmen<\/strong>t associated with the processing and sharing of sensitive data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compliance with the recommendations of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chuv.ch\/en\/bdsc\/data-driven-innovation-in-medicine\">Biomedical Data Science Center<\/a> regarding data de-identification and the assessment of whether data may be shared openly or under restricted access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Funder Validation and Contractual Aspects<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The DSBU provides support regarding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SNSF FAIR and Open Research Data requirements;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preparation for European audits or SNSF compliance checks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>data-sharing licenses (CC-BY, CC0) and copyright issues;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compliance with&nbsp;<strong>Data Transfer and Use Agreements (DTUA)<\/strong>&nbsp;issued by CHUV or UNIL legal services and the&nbsp;<strong>PACTT Knowledge Transfer Office<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scientific Visibility and Data Valorization<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The DSBU contributes to enhancing the value and visibility of research data through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>indexing of CHUV datasets in the&nbsp;<strong>HORUS Dataset Catalog (CHUV)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>automated indexing of FBM UNIL\/CHUV datasets in researchers\u2019&nbsp;<strong>UNIL profiles<\/strong> via IRIS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Research Data Categories Subject to DSBU FAIR \/ ORD Service Fees<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following section defines the <strong>categories of research data for which DSBU FAIR and ORD services are provided under a cost-recovery model.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.1 Experimental Data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>raw data<\/strong> generated by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unil.ch\/fbm\/en\/home\/menuinst\/recherche\/plateformes.html\">FBM core research facility<\/a> <\/strong>(e.g., imaging, microscopy, in vivo imaging, behavioral, biochemical, electrophysiology, flow cytometry\/FACS, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, mass spectrometry,&#8230;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raw data<\/strong> produced by FBM <strong>research laboratories<\/strong>, internally or within the framework of external collaborations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2,2 Clinical Research Data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>raw data<\/strong> originating from <strong>CHUV platforms <\/strong>or generated within <strong>clinical research projects<\/strong> (e.g., clinical, demographic, interventional, medical imaging data,&#8230;);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clinical data intended for FAIR sharing or controlled dissemination of metadata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2,3 Secondary Data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>secondary data used for the analyses, results, and conclusions of a scientific publication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These provisions <strong>apply in particular to data<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>underpinning the conclusions of a scientific publication<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>produced within projects funded by the&nbsp;<strong>SNSF<\/strong>&nbsp;or the&nbsp;<strong>European Union<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Economic Model and Financial Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The services provided by the DSBU are based on a&nbsp;<strong>mixed economic model<\/strong>, combining institutional faculty support with a contribution from research groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The model clearly distinguishes between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>activities forming the institutional baseline and covered by\u00a0FBM\/UNIL<\/strong> institutional support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>activities eligible for SNSF reimbursement and covered by research groups<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1 Institutional Support from FBM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain activities that are essential for compliance and preservation in research data management <strong>fall under the structural support of the FBM and are funded by the faculty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FBM finances structural activities including, in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>development, maintenance, and evolution of DSBU tools,<\/strong> including<br>DataSquid<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>,&nbsp;DeepScan<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>,&nbsp;FAIR Bioimage Metadata Extractor<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>, and&nbsp;FAIRShare Explorer<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>(<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/dsbu\/tools\/\">link<\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>creation and validation of&nbsp;<strong>DMPs (DSW\u2013ELIXIR)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>activities associated with <strong>short- and long-term storage<\/strong> <strong>(LTS)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>curation of data and metadata when researchers leave the institution;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helpdesk, ticket follow-up, and technical support;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FBM and CHUV <strong>doctoral training<\/strong><br>(RDM, FAIR, archiving, research integrity).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These tasks constitute the&nbsp;non-reimbursable baseline infrastructure&nbsp;supporting collective operations and are integrated i<strong>nto the faculty budget.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.2 Costs covered by research groups<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>FAIR Data Package<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup><\/strong>&nbsp;covers the <strong>contribution from research groups within the mixed funding model.<\/strong> It includes the services provided by the DSBU that are <strong>funded by researchers<\/strong> and <strong>are eligible for reimbursement by the <strong>Swiss National Science Foundation <\/strong><\/strong>(<strong>SNSF<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>FAIR Data Package<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup><\/strong>&nbsp;provides research groups with comprehensive support through the data stewardship infrastructure, including tools, expertise, scientific guidance, and assistance with FAIR data management and data sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two service packages FAIR Data Package<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>\u2014&nbsp;<strong>ESSENTIAL<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>ADVANCED<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 differ only in terms of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>volume <\/strong>of data to be processed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>number of datasets<\/strong> to be structured and shared;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <strong>diversity of data types<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the number of FAIR <strong>consulting hours included<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3aeca13885f41be8ca7cbee25bbbf556\" style=\"color:#b00e0e\"><strong>Subscription to one of the paid service packages <strong>(FAIR Data Package<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup>)<\/strong> is expected for any project submitted to SNSF\u00a0or to\u00a0European funding schemes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <strong>expectation\u00a0may be waived if a member of the research group fulfills the role of data scientist<\/strong>, provided that their data stewardship qualifications are assessed and validated by the DSBU at the time of the budget request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.3 <strong>Services Included in the <strong>annual FAIR\/ORD service packages &#8211; FAIR Data Package<sup>\u00a9DSBU<\/sup><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two service levels are available depending on the&nbsp;<strong>complexity and volume of datasets generated by the project<\/strong> through&nbsp;<strong>annual service packages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table Research Data)<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.4.1 <strong>SNSF Funding Available (up to CHF 10,000)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The SNSF supports researchers in making the data generated by their projects accessible with funding of up to&nbsp;<strong>CHF 10,000 per project<\/strong> <strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snf.ch\/en\/dsGZpQh4ak55ycds\/page\/enter-a-proposal\/budget\">link<\/a>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SNFS Eligible costs for making research data accessible:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Costs for data preparation (e.g. cleaning up data, creating metadata and anonymising data)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs for publication in scientifically recognised, digital data repositories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>data repositories must fulfil the FAIR principles<\/strong> (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snf.ch\/media\/en\/zKRJknEq0OHE5pEQ\/Checklist_data_repositories.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Checklist&nbsp;(PDF)<\/a> and Clauses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snf.ch\/en\/Zi65otScMDqzyALN\/page\/funding\/documents-downloads\/regulations-general-implementation-regulations#2-13\">2.13<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a This data should be made available as soon as possible, at the latest together with the relevant scientific publication, and should be archived in recognized scientific data repositories that meet the FAIR data principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 In specific cases, the SNSF reserves the right to require grant recipients to share all data relevant for further research, regardless of any link to a scientific publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 A data management plan (DMP) must be submitted in accordance with SNSF guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>67.
