The Unithèque building, which houses the Canton and University Library and restaurants, represents the campus focal point. Constructed in 1983, this extensively used building is now about to be extended.
The competition to design and build the extension was won by the Abaka development project submitted by the Lausanne firm of Fruehauf, Henry and Viladoms. The extension will be located primarily on the sloping section of the site and is characterised by a prominent ‘lighthouse’ feature, designed to draw light into the interior.
From 2019, users will be able to take advantage of 2000 work stations (as against 863 at present), as well as a doubling of the library’s storage space. The cafeterias will also benefit from increased capacity.
