{"id":623,"date":"2026-02-02T12:01:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T11:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/dino\/?p=623"},"modified":"2026-02-02T12:01:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T11:01:46","slug":"decentralisation-in-enterprise-blockchain-governance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/dino\/decentralisation-in-enterprise-blockchain-governance\/","title":{"rendered":"Decentralisation in Enterprise Blockchain\u00a0Governance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Blockchain is often presented as inherently decentralised.<br>In enterprise settings, the opposite frequently happens.<br><br>We wanted to know why.<br><br>Our new paper in the Journal of Information Technology (JIT) examines four enterprise blockchain initiatives and shows why many end up reproducing centralised governance.<br><br>The key driver is&nbsp;early governance design:<br>\u2022&nbsp;Platform openness&nbsp;\u2013 who is allowed to join<br>\u2022&nbsp;Participant inclusiveness&nbsp;\u2013 who can meaningfully influence decisions<br><br>These two choices act as&nbsp;imprinting mechanisms. They embed power relations into the platform\u2019s architecture and rules, shaping whether governance becomes decentralised, centralised, or hybrid \u2014 and making later change difficult.<br><br>Key takeaway: decentralisation is not an automatic outcome of using blockchain.
