"Data-driven approaches for specialized enzyme and pathway discovery from microbiomes "
|
Abstract: Microbes encode a remarkable diversity of enzymes to synthesize and break down bioactive compounds in environment ranging from the human gut to the ocean. This talk will introduce data-driven approaches to mine metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets for new microbial biotransformations. Specifically, I will cover how genome-resolved metagenomics enabled our discovery of a new enzyme family that catalyzes backbone N-methylation of ribosomally-synthesized peptides in abundant and uncultivated marine bacteria. As an outlook, I will cover work in our new research group to identify enzymes degrading organic pollutants in human and environmental microbiomes.

Bio: Serina Robinson is a tenure-track group leader in the Department of Environmental Microbiology at EAWAG. Prior to starting at EAWAG in September 2021, she was an ETH Zürich postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Dr. Jörn Piel. She obtained her PhD in Microbiology and MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the University of Minnesota with Prof. Dr. Larry Wackett. Her research combines computational and applied experimental approaches to characterize microbial biotransformations from meta’omics datasets .
