DBC WELCOME

The whole DBC extends the warmest of welcomes to new members.
Karol Piera
Doctoral student, Group Dal Co

Originally trained as a biologist and a neuroscientist, I built up strong interest in the field of systems biology and quantitative approaches.
After obtaining my BSc in Biology in my home city of Cracow, I set out to study the most complex system in our body - the brain. I subsequently completed MSc in Cognitive neuroscience at Freie Universitat in Berlin. My research work and master thesis were carried out at the Donders Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Cognition in Nijmegen, Netherlands. There I worked on inhibitory networks in the mouse model of intellectual disability syndrome and also in parallel on a platform for light-controllable optogenetic stimulation of neuronal populations in culture.
Following my fascination with light-activated optogenetic systems and their powerful applications, I joined a project in the Control theory and systems biology group of prof. Khammash at ETH Zurich as a research assistant. While there, I developed and refined optogenetic approaches to study mammalian cells. My interest in studying biological systems from an interdisciplinary perspective and eagerness to combine experimental work with computational approaches brought me to the newly established group of prof. Alma Dalco where I will pursue my doctoral work.
