DBC News is a monthly publication that seeks to inform first and foremost faculty members, researchers and students. It also reaches out to a wider community - Department of Computational Biology partners, visiting faculty and friends.

Alongside the Department's website it is a complementary means of keeping abreast of the Department's rich and diversified scientific activities - visiting faculty, exceptional conferences, publications, awards, appointments, calls for papers and research, ...

Summer is...almost there

Before going on holiday, here are below few informations:

  • From 17 June 2021, UNIL will be offering its entire community a testing concept as recommended by the canton of Vaud health authorities.
Any colleague or student who wishes to do so can carry out a COVID-19 test (self-test by nasal swab) when they come to the campus.
More info here

  • Following the Federal Council's announcements, the health measures in place on the UNIL campus have been updated. New provisions have been introduced, in particular concerning the precautionary measures to be respected, the conditions of access to the buildings, the rules relating to the organisation of events and F&B. The COVID testing scheme is still available to the UNIL community. More info here
  • The secretariat will be closed from July 26th to August 6th - In case of any emergency, please send an email to

But most importantly, We wish you the happiest and healthiest of summers!!

The whole DBC extends the warmest of welcomes to new members.
Kaido Lepik
Postdoctoral researcher, Group Kutalik

Having recently finished my doctoral studies on causal inference in human genetics – in the Bioinformatics, Algorithmics and Data Mining research group (BIIT) in the University of Tartu, Estonia (supervised by Prof. Hedi Peterson and Prof. Jaak Vilo) – I am now continuing to pursue my research interests in Prof. Zoltán Kutalik’s Statistical Genetics Group (SGG) as a postdoc. Previously, I obtained a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in mathematical statistics, also at the University of Tartu. These studies were complemented with formal training in machine learning and algorithmics. Prior to engulfing myself in academia, I worked in industry for a market research company.

Intern, Group Salamin

Many thanks to you for the good collaboration throughout these years and we all wish every success in your future endeavours.

Primer: Causal Inference using our Genetics

A result of the science outreach workshop ran by the DBC - UNIL. In this short video primer, I introduce you to Randomised Control Trials and their genetic counterpart Mendelian Randomisation (MR), and how I'm working on a more robust MR method for my PhD.

July 7th - 17:30-19h30, on Zoom

The [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference provides a unique platform to scientists at all career stages to present their research. It unites researchers from academia, industry and healthcare working in a broad range of disciplines: from deciphering spatiotemporal gene expression patterns, to modelling evolutionary dynamics or acquiring a better understanding of how genetics influence human health.
