About the Workshop

Cancer evolution is a multi-faceted process and a major clinical challenge. Indeed, tumours constantly change as they progress through multiple mechanisms, the understanding of which is critical to anticipate disease phenotypes and response to therapy.

Research in the last few years has focused on the emergence and selection of genetic variants affecting protein functions. However, coding genes represent 2% of the human genome, tumor cells exhibit a wide variety of non-genetic (or epigenetic) alterations, and aberrant transcriptional programs ultimately determine cancer cell phenotypes. The role of the non-coding genome and epigenetic and transcriptional heterogeneity are only now emerging as alternative fuel for tumour evolution, sustained by technological advances to explore tumour heterogeneity at single cell and spatial resolution.

This EMBO Workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary community of scientists with the goal of facilitating discussion and collaborations around genetic and non-genetic mechanisms of cancer evolution. The primary objective is to expand the current genetic-centric view with a mechanistic perspective centred around transcriptional and epigenetic alterations.

Understanding the interplay between complementary and synergistic mechanisms of disease progression will offer tremendous opportunities and equally matched challenges. Here, a prism of complementary ideas will be required to elucidate the many faces of cancer evolution.

About EMBO Courses and Workshops

EMBO Courses and Workshops are selected for their excellent scientific quality and timelines, provision of good networking activities for all participants and speaker gender diversity (at least 40% of speakers must be from the underrepresented gender).

Transport

There is one international airport servicing Rimini, namely, Federico Fellini Airport, also referred to as Rimini-Miramare Airport. This airport is located 8 km from the city, and it is serviced by some 20 airline companies which provide connections with European cities like Moscow, Frankfurt, Rome, as well as a few non-European destinations.

The largest airport in proximity of Rimini is Bologna Airport located at 100 km from Rimini. In order to get from Bologna Airport to Rimini, attendees can first use the bus to reach to Bologna Centrale train station and then reach Rimini by train (~1h20’). Alternatively, Rimini can be reached by car from Bologna airport in ~1h15’. Finally, there is a shuttle service (approx. every 2 hrs) connecting Bologna airport to Rimini train station which is 20 min walking distance from the location and 10-15min from the hotels: Timetables for shuttle service

Rimini is well connected by train to all major cities in Italy. The main train station is in Piazzale Cesare Battisti, a 10-minute walk from the city centre and 15-minute walk from the beach front.

Finally, Rimini is approximately ~270 km from the international airport of Venice and ~400 km from the international airports of Rome (Fiumicino) and Milan (Malpensa). From these cities, Rimini can be reached by train (3h30’ from Milan, ~4hrs from Rome or Venice) or by car (2h45’ from Venice, ~4hrs from both Rome and Milan).

About the Area

Rimini is a relatively small town (140.000) along the Italian north-eastern coast. The long beach front hosts several hotels, bars, and restaurants. The historical city centre (containing roman and medieval architectonic masterpieces) is only 2km from the beach and well connected through a dense network of buses. Overall, all major destinations of this event will be at walking distance.

RockIsland will provide the perfect location for what we envision as a rather informal gathering, so leave at home your suit and bring your flip-flops!
