DBC News is a monthly publication that seeks to inform first and foremost faculty members, researchers and students. It also reaches out to a wider community - Department of Computaional Biology partners, esteemed visiting faculty and friends.
Alongside the Department's website it is a complementary means of keeping abreast of the Department's rich and diversified scientific activities - visiting faculty, exceptional conferences, publications, awards, appointments, calls for papers and research, ...

Post-Doctoral student, Group Dessimoz
I did my PhD at ETH Zurich in the group of Prof. Jukka Jokela. I worked on the genomics of adaptation of a trematode parasite Atriophallophorus winterbourni to its snail host, both over macroevolutionary scales (using comparative genomics methods) and microevolutionary scales (using population genomics methods). I will be joining the group of Prof. Christophe Dessimoz to work on the evolution of genome architecture focusing on gene synteny in trematode parasites.

Do you feel like a banana today?
This may be normal because some say that humans share 50% of their DNA with bananas!
And what else can computational biology do for you? Can it help better monitor the progress of the current epidemic? All the answers are in the CQFD show, to listen to urgently!

COMMUNICATING SCIENCE - APRIL 22ND
In this presentation, Dr. Lê Nguyên Hoang will share his background in scientific communication, as well as tips for successful communication
After obtaining a engineering degree from the École Polytechnique in Paris, Lê Nguyên Hoang received a PhD from Polytechnique Montreal, and then became a postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then became a computer science researcher and a science communicator at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He also runs the YouTube channel Science4All, with 200k+ subscribers. He authored the books "The equation of knowledge", "Le fabuleux chantier" (with El Mahdi El Mhamdi) and "Turing à la plage" (with Rachid Guerraoui). More recently, he co-invented Tournesol.app, a platform for collaborative content recommendation

JOIN THE COMPUTATIONAL DISCUSSION
The [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference provides a unique platform to scientists at all career stages to present their research. It unites researchers from academia, industry and healthcare working in a broad range of disciplines: from deciphering spatiotemporal gene expression patterns, to modelling evolutionary dynamics or acquiring a better understanding of how genetics influence human health.
