Candidates are encouraged to propose their own PhD project idea within the broad research themes below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the atmospheric physics side, topics of interest include, in alphabetical order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aerosol\u2013cloud interactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Air\u2013sea and land\u2013atmosphere interactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric convection and moist turbulence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric predictability and forecasting across timescales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric radiation, including cloud\u2013radiation interactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cloud physics, including microphysical processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-processing and spatiotemporal downscaling of weather forecasts and climate projections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tropical meteorology, including tropical cyclones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weather and climate extremes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the AI side, topics of interest include, in alphabetical order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Causal ML, including causal representation learning and causal discovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distillation for scientific discovery, including equation learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generative modeling, including ensemble modeling and uncertainty quantification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generalization, including robustness to statistical non-stationarity, for example out-of-distribution climates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hybrid physics\u2013AI modeling, including ML parameterizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interpretable ML<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowledge-guided ML, including physics-constrained ML<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsible use of foundation models for weather and climate applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scale-aware and adaptive AI, including operator learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific benchmarks and community evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable and resource-efficient AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal is not expected to be a final PhD plan. Rather, it should help us understand the candidate\u2019s scientific interests and technical capabilities. Promising ideas will be further developed during the selection process and, for the selected candidates, during the PhD. Proposed projects should be creative, feasible, and well aligned with the group\u2019s expertise and collaborative network. Both PhD projects may involve collaborations within UNIL, across Switzerland, and internationally, depending on the candidate\u2019s interests and proposed project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your responsibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful candidates will be expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct independent, innovative, and responsible research at the interface of atmospheric science and artificial intelligence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a creative and feasible PhD project in collaboration with the supervisor and, when relevant, additional collaborators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disseminate research results through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, workshops, and other open-science channels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make research outputs as open and reproducible as possible, including code, data-processing workflows, documentation, and preprints where appropriate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share progress regularly in group meetings and participate actively in scientific discussions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Openly discuss research roadblocks, seek advice when needed, and contribute to a supportive lab culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage with collaborators through regular online and\/or in-person meetings, depending on the project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating research environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your qualifications<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants should have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A master\u2019s degree, or an equivalent degree expected before the start date, in a quantitative field related to atmospheric science, climate science, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, data science, or a closely related discipline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong scientific programming and data-analysis skills, ideally including proficiency in Python<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience working with scientific datasets or large-scale numerical model output<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A solid foundation in applied mathematics and\/or physics; relevant areas may include calculus, differential equations, statistics, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, numerical modeling, or machine learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong communication skills in English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enthusiasm for both atmospheric science and scientific machine learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries and learn unfamiliar concepts when needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional qualifications that are welcome but not required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience with high-performance computing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with machine-learning methods or frameworks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with climate, weather, atmospheric, or environmental datasets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with numerical weather prediction or Earth-system modeling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching and\/or mentoring experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with open-source or reproducible research workflows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Language requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Position 1:<\/strong> Proficiency in both <strong>English and French<\/strong> is required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Position 2:<\/strong> Proficiency in <strong>English<\/strong> is required. French is not required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proficiency in German is not required for either position.
