The preferred duration is 6-12 months.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading alignfull has-text-align-center\">Mission<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>As part of UNIL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/cap2037\/en\/\">CAP2037 transition strategy<\/a> to strengthen its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.ch\/sites\/default\/files\/doc-2024-11\/20241107_University_Rating_2024.pdf#page=21.16\">sustainability leadership<\/a> and EPFL\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/about\/sustainability\/sustainable-it\/\">Sustainable IT strategy<\/a> that supports research excellence, UNIL and EPFL seek to understand how academic institutions could shape research practices to better integrate sustainability, particularly around issues related to the usage of digital technology (storage, computing, AI, and IT equipment, for example).<br><br>Both institutions wish to better understand the speci\ufb01c challenges faced by funding agencies to contribute to a coherent integration of sustainability into research. We are therefore seeking a motivated candidate to contribute to this project and enable EPFL and UNIL, together with the sustainability team at the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), to propose levers for action to reduce the environmental footprint of IT in research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading alignfull has-text-align-center\">Project Description<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>The project has two main phases (each lasting approximately 5-6 months):<br><br>1. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mapping actors and frameworks<\/span>: You will map, in close collaboration with the SNSF, the key actors involved in the lifecycle of research funding in Switzerland, from call design to project evaluation and reporting. You will review current initiatives at the European level, identify decision-makers and leverage points for integrating sustainability criteria, and examine the legal and regulatory framework to propose feasible options aligned with the Swiss Confederation\u2019s objectives.<br><br>2. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Co-designing a steering framework<\/span>: You will design and facilitate workshops bringing together the identi\ufb01ed actors (UNIL, EPFL, SNSF, and other stakeholders) to co-design a steering framework for sustainable research computing. You will gather and structure participants\u2019 contributions in a \ufb01nal report that presents the proposed measures and provides recommendations for their potential integration into the funding lifecycle.<br><br>You will work within both institutions as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/dawn\/\">\u2202<sup>3<\/sup>AWN<\/a> research team at UNIL (FGSE) with Tom Beucler, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/systemf.epfl.ch\/\">SYSTEMF<\/a> laboratory at EPFL with Cl\u00e9ment Pit-Claudel, and in the sustainability team of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/about\/sustainability\/\">Vice Presidency for Strategic Initiatives (VPS)<\/a> with Manuel Cubero-Castan and Julia Paolini.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading alignfull has-text-align-center\">Your Qualifications<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bachelor&#8217;s or master&#8217;s degree, ideally in sustainability\/environmental science, computer science or social sciences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong interest in co-design approaches and participatory processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong interest in sustainability issues in the \ufb01eld of research and IT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working pro\ufb01ciency in both English and French; German is an asset<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ability to conduct documentary research, critical analysis and synthesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Good writing and communication skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Autonomy, rigor and initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collaborative spirit and ability to adapt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading alignfull has-text-align-center\">We offer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The opportunity to develop insight into the Swiss research system including stakeholders and mechanisms that underpin research (funding) activities, providing a work experience relevant for strategic roles in academia and sustainability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The opportunity to work in collaboration with both UNIL and EPFL, develop cross-disciplinary skills, and discover the link between theory and practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Applications should be sent to manuel.cubero-castan@epfl.ch and will be considered on a rolling basis starting December 1, 2025.
