A for ape, G for goose, L for lamb \u2013 in 1949, two artists created an alphabet mural comprising 24\u202ftiles for the Wylergut\u202fschoolhouse on behalf of the City\u202fof\u202fBern. Among this ABC of animal and nature themes were three\u202fdepictions of non-white people. On the mural, C stood for Chinese, I for the Indigenous Person of America and N for the Black person \u2013 conveying a colonial, racist view of the world.<\/p>\n

In 2019, an anti-racist collective criticised the fact that this mural remained on display in a school without being challenged. This prompted the City\u202fof\u202fBern to launch a competition to decide the mural\u2019s fate \u2013 won by the association \u201cThe\u202fMural\u202fMust\u202fGo!\u201d following its proposal to remove the piece and transfer it to the Bernisches\u202fHistorisches\u202fMuseum. Removal of the mural has been the subject of divisive debate in Bern ever since.<\/p>\n

The museum will adopt the historical mural in spring 2024, opening the way for the debate that society demands. As a guest curator, the association will be staging an accompanying exhibition to reflect the multifaceted discussions around the mural and about how to deal with it. In addition, enduring colonial patterns and structural racism will be contextualised in the present. The exhibition will give food for thought for the public discourse about how we as a society want to deal with this cultural heritage from the colonial era.<\/p>\n

R comme renne, P comme p\u00e9lican, V comme volcan\u202f: en 1949, deux artistes ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 sur un mur de l\u2019\u00e9cole Wylergut, pour le compte de la ville de Berne, une fresque de 24\u202fimages repr\u00e9sentant l\u2019alphabet. La plupart des lettres sont illustr\u00e9es par des \u00e9l\u00e9ments naturels ou des animaux, mais trois montrent des personnes non blanches\u202f: un Chinois pour le C, un indig\u00e8ne d\u2019Am\u00e9rique pour le I et une personne noire pour le N. Cette fresque d\u00e9peint donc une image coloniale et raciste du monde.<\/p>\n

En 2019, un collectif antiraciste critique la pr\u00e9sence de ces images non comment\u00e9es dans une \u00e9cole. La ville de Berne organise alors un concours pour d\u00e9cider de l\u2019avenir de cette fresque. L\u2019association \u00ab\u202fRetirons la fresque\u202f!\u202f\u00bb gagne en proposant d\u2019enlever celle-ci et de la transf\u00e9rer au Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Histoire de Berne. Depuis, ce retrait fait pol\u00e9mique \u00e0 Berne.<\/p>\n

Le mus\u00e9e r\u00e9cup\u00e8re cette fresque historique au printemps\u202f2024 et cr\u00e9e un espace de d\u00e9bat soci\u00e9tal. Organisatrice invit\u00e9e, l\u2019association con\u00e7oit une exposition qui refl\u00e8te les nombreuses discussions autour de cette fresque et la fa\u00e7on de l\u2019aborder. Par ailleurs, ces arch\u00e9types coloniaux ancr\u00e9s et ce racisme structurel sont replac\u00e9s dans le contexte actuel. L\u2019exposition incite \u00e0 la r\u00e9flexion sur le discours public\u202f: comment abordons-nous en tant que soci\u00e9t\u00e9 cet h\u00e9ritage culturel issu de la p\u00e9riode coloniale\u202f?<\/p>\n

A wie Affe, M wie Muschel, Z wie Ziege: Im Auftrag der Stadt Bern erschaffen 1949 zwei K\u00fcnstler im Schulhaus Wylergut ein Wandalphabet mit 24\u202fBildfeldern. Eingereiht in dieses ABC mit Tier- und Naturmotiven sind auch drei Darstellungen von nicht-weissen Menschen. C steht f\u00fcr Chinese, I f\u00fcr die indigene Person Amerikas und N f\u00fcr die schwarze Person. Damit vermittelt das Wandbild ein koloniales, rassistisches Weltbild.<\/p>\n

2019 kritisiert ein antirassistisches Kollektiv, dass diese Darstellungen weiterhin unkommentiert in einem Schulhaus zu sehen sind. Die Stadt Bern schreibt in der Folge einen Wettbewerb zum Umgang mit dem Wandbild aus. Der Verein \u00abDas Wandbild muss weg!\u00bb gewinnt mit dem Vorschlag, das Werk zu entfernen und ins Bernische Historische Museum zu \u00fcberf\u00fchren. Die Abnahme des Wandbilds wird seither in Bern kontrovers diskutiert.<\/p>\n

Das Museum \u00fcbernimmt das historische Wandbild im Fr\u00fchling 2024 und schafft Raum f\u00fcr die gesellschaftlich geforderte Debatte. Im Rahmen eines Gastkuratoriums gestaltet der Verein eine Ausstellung dazu. Diese widerspiegelt die vielstimmige Diskussion rund um das Wandbild und den Umgang damit. Zudem werden best\u00e4ndige koloniale Muster und struktureller Rassismus im Jetzt verortet. Die Ausstellung bietet Denkanst\u00f6sse f\u00fcr den \u00f6ffentlichen Diskurs, wie wir als Gesellschaft mit diesem Kulturerbe aus der Kolonialzeit umgehen m\u00f6chten.<\/p>\n
