{"id":4862,"date":"2026-04-29T12:14:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T10:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/acidul\/?page_id=4862"},"modified":"2026-04-29T12:35:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T10:35:29","slug":"phd-candidates-on-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/acidul\/phd-candidates-on-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD candidates on scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the University of Lausanne, it is possible to pursue a PhD while being funded by a scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Important<\/span>: receiving a doctoral scholarship does not mean that you have an <strong>employment contract<\/strong> with the University. To distinguish between the two, an employment contract is a document issued by Human Resources that specifies a workload percentage. As a scholarship holder, you will be considered by UNIL as a student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most common scholarships for researchers coming from outside Switzerland are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbfi.admin.ch\/sbfi\/en\/home\/education\/scholarships-and-grants\/swiss-government-excellence-scholarships.html\">Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinesescholarshipcouncil.com\/\">China Scholarship Council<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/knb.kemdikbud.go.id\/\">Scholarship from the Republic of Indonesia<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The amounts granted under these three scholarships are unfortunately <strong>insufficient to live on in Switzerland<\/strong>, especially in cities with a high cost of living such as Lausanne. It is generally estimated that a minimum income of CHF 2,500 per month is needed to live decently in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To supplement your scholarship, your supervisor may offer you a PAT contract of up to 20%. You may also apply independently for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unil.ch\/unil\/en\/home\/menuinst\/recherche\/soutien-recherche\/doctorat\/avant-de-debuter-un-doctorat\/financer-son-doctorat.html\">complementary scholarship<\/a> from UNIL. Please note that it is not possible to hold both a PAT contract and receive the supplementary grant at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Swiss Government scholarship holders, your <strong>health insurance <\/strong>provider is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advisor-swiss.com\/en\/home\/\">Swiss Advisor<\/a>. Details regarding the coverage of your medical costs can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/acidul\/files\/2026\/04\/conditions-generales-swiss-advisor_boursiers-et-boursieres-de-la-confederation.pdf\">here<\/a>.
