We are excited to announce that Prof. Vivek Choudhary from NTU Singapore, will be delivering a seminar on\u00a0Can Simple Messages Reduce Investigation Time? Evidence from a Field Experiment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:<\/strong> In this paper, we focus on reducing the time required to complete criminal investigations. We collaborated with the state police force in India to collect data from a six-month field experiment involving ~4,000 investigating officers. Officers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group that received no intervention, a punitive group that received messages framed around potential negative consequences, and a prosocial group that received messages emphasizing the benefits to victims. Our analysis of the investigation process suggests that these cost-effective messages have the potential to reduce investigation time by 7- 10%, without compromising\u00a0quality. However, we find significant heterogeneity in the effects across geographical (e.g., rural), and operational (e.g., high workload) contexts. Further, we analyze how investigators queue\/prioritize their work as well as use digital technology post\u00a0intervention in improving their efficiency. Through detailed field interviews, we shed light on potential mechanisms at play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Bio:<\/strong> Vivek is an Assistant Professor in ITOM at Nanyang Business School, Singapore. He studies behavioral operations problems, with research spanning last-mile delivery, health tech, and insurtech platforms. He employs methods such as field experiments, machine learning, and econometrics in his work and collaborates with firms and governments for his research. He holds a PhD from INSEAD and obtained his BTech & MTech (Dual Degree) from IIT Kharagpur in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to his academic career, he worked as a consultant with McKinsey & Company and managed operations for one of the largest\u00a0 FMCG companies in India (ITC Limited). He is the coordinator for the OM PhD program and serves as an advisor to several startups. He is an incoming AE for the Decision Sciences journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
