Lipid absorption

Malabsorption (a failure to fully absorb nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract) can lead to malnutrition. On the other side, reduction of intestinal fat absorption is the therapeutic strategy of the most commonly used medication to treat obesity (Orlistat, Xenical).

The measurement of the stool lipid content, an index of gastrointestinal lipid absorption, is commonly used in both humans and rodents in the diagnosis of malabsorption of fats and oils.

Food intake, stool mass and stool lipid content can be measured.

Lipids are extracted by the Folch method. Parameters measured :

  • Total cholesterol, Free fatty acids, Triglycerides.
