Currency and tipping

Currency

Switzerland is not part of the European Union and its currency is not the euro but the Swiss Franc (CHF). You can check the XE website for the exchange rates. (1 euro = 1.09 CHF on 11.10.2016)

Restaurants and stores usually accept debit and credit cards. To obtain cash, you can withdraw money at ATMs or use currency exchange offices at the airport or train station and in banks.

On campus, it is not possible to pay with a credit or debit card. An ATM is at your disposal on the 1st floor of the Anthropole building and on the 1st floor of the Internef building.

Tips

Tips

Tipping in Switzerland is entirely voluntary but very common. Between 5-10% would be typical, or rounding up the bill, to show appreciation for good personal service.
