The new Rector of the University of Lausanne is a biologist specialising in fundamental gene research.
Nouria Hernandez, who is 58 years old, will take up post on 1 August 2016. She will succeed Dominique Arlettaz, current Rector, who did not wish to seek a further term in office. Nouria Hernandez obtained a doctorate in molecular biology from the University of Heidelberg. In 1987, she was appointed head of the team at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory near New York. She then became professor at the Watson School of Biological Sciences in 1998 on its founding. In 2004, Nouria Hernandez joined UNIL as a visiting professor then, in 2005, as professor and director of the Center for Integrative Genomics (CIG), a post she held until 2014.
